Potato or Egg?
Introduction
Life is not always easy. Every person faces challenges, hardships, and difficulties at different stages of life. However, what makes people different is not the problems they face but how they respond to those problems. The story of the potato and the egg teaches an important lesson about resilience, character, and personal growth.
Body
One day, a young woman repeatedly complained to her father that life had become too difficult for her. Instead of giving her advice, her father decided to teach her a practical lesson.
He filled two identical pots with water and placed them on the fire until the water boiled. Then he asked his daughter to bring a potato and an egg. He put the potato into one pot and the egg into the other. After twenty minutes, he removed them and asked his daughter to touch both.
The potato, which had been hard before it was boiled, had become soft and weak. The egg, which had been fragile before boiling, had become firm and strong inside.
The father then explained, “Both the potato and the egg faced the same boiling water, just as people face the same kinds of difficulties in life. The difference was in how they responded. The potato became weak, while the egg became stronger. Likewise, the challenges you face do not determine who you become. Your character and your response to those challenges do.”
This lesson applies to everyone. Some people lose hope, give up, or become discouraged when they face difficulties. They are like the potato. Others use hardships as opportunities to learn, grow, and become stronger. They are like the egg.
For example, a student who fails an examination may quit studying because of disappointment. Such a student is like the potato. However, another student may learn from the failure, work harder, and succeed in the next examination. That student is like the egg.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the story of the potato and the egg reminds us that adversity reveals our character. We cannot always choose the challenges that come into our lives, but we can choose how we respond to them. Therefore, when difficulties arise, do not become weak like the potato. Instead, be strong, courageous, and resilient like the egg, and let every challenge make you a better and stronger person.
