Trachoma (Trachoma)
Trachoma is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia Trachomatis that affects our eyes. Trachoma is a blinding disease that can be prevented and cured if treated early.
Risk factors for trachoma
✓ Lack of clean water
✓ Failure to maintain personal and environmental hygiene
✓ Engagement in place/Hurufa (open defecation)
✓ Touching our eyes and face with unclean objects
How is trachoma transmitted?
✓ Touching face and eyes with unclean hands
✓ Share clothes
✓ If a tick touches the eyes or lips of a person with Trachoma and settles on us
✓ Contact with an infected person
Symptoms of Trachoma
✓ Redness of the eyes
✓ Hooking eyes
✓ Tearful eyes
✓ Eye pain
✓ Inability to see the light
✓ If the pain is severe, the lids/eyelids may retract and the pupil may become blind.
Prevention of Trachoma
✓ Maintain personal and environmental hygiene
✓ Treat the infected person immediately
✓ Maintain and monitor children’s hygiene
✓ Use enough and clean water
✓ Not sharing clothes
